Doe Mountain Recreation Area

Quick Info:

Northeast Tennessee (and it’s bordering area of Southwestern Virginia) is a criminally underrated region of Appalachia. As far as tourism destinations, to the southwest there’s the incredibly popular Smoky Mountains, to the south is the area surrounding Asheville NC, to the northeast is the Shenandoah area. The mountains in far northeast Tennessee are just as beautiful and tall, but much less bustling than those others. I mean, if there’s not a Jason Aldean branded Bar or a kooky local brewery, who wants to go? (sigh)

But taking that a step further and diving in the Powersports tourism realm, you get the same sort of story. To the north is the household name in OHV trails in the Hatfield McCoy Trails in West Virginia, and even Virginia’s Spearhead Trails System; to the west is Tennessee’s own incredibly popular triangle of Windrock Park, Brimstone Recreation Area, Ride Royal Blue, and the other TWRA trails in that area; even here in my backyard is Mine Made Adventure Park and Black Mountain Offroad.

What percentage of the people riding the above mentions trail systems have heard of Doe Mountain Recreation Area? It sure doesn’t seem like a lot. From the time I put on the Mountain, it seems wild that there aren’t more people at least aware of it.

I do need to put some perspective on what’s offered at DMRA for those thinking of making a trip. I don’t know that the SxS crowd would be happy to trailer their rigs all the way there. The trail system is built basically on top of one mountain, which is similar to Black Mountain Offroad in Harlan County KY, but the overall mileage of trail for bigger off-roaders is somewhat low. The technicality levels on much of the SxS trails seems pretty low as well, but is on par with a lot of the other intently managed riding areas (read: stays out of trouble with environmental groups, which is a great thing!). It’s close to an hour and a half drive from the nearest trailhead on Virginia’s Spearhead Trails system, so you’re also not very close to other offerings.

That said, where Doe Mountain really shines is for those of us that regularly ride dirt bikes. DMRA has really put a lot of attention on Singletrack trails and, in my opinion, has some of the best in this region. Mileage wise, we hillbillies don’t have a lot of singletrack around here. HMT, Spearhead, Windrock all have it, but in relatively small doses. Point being, anytime a new system puts attention on two-wheelers, it’s a big deal. If you’re an enduro rider, I think you would be very happy making it a point to get to Doe Mountain Recreation Area!
